Botox

BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) is an FDA-approved injectable neurotoxin used for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles in the face. These wrinkles result from the natural movements of underlying facial muscles and can ultimately produce deeper lines over time. BOTOX® works by relaxing these muscles and allowing the skin in the affected area to have a temporary reduction in movement, which usually lasts 3-4-months. This treatment is most commonly used in the glabella (between the eyebrows), forehead, and around the eyes (crow’s feet). Most patients see the results of treatment in about 5-days, but it may take up to two weeks to see full effect. These injections are completed with a very small gauge needle and cause minimal to no bruising. The possible side effects of this treatment include a drooping of the upper eyelid or eyebrow when treating around the eye or in the lower forehead. If this occurs, it is often limited to a few weeks and can be improved with prescription eye drops. Ultimately, the goal of this therapy is to achieve a more refreshed, relaxed appearance by reducing muscle movements and reducing skin lines without completely eliminating facial expressions.

BOTOX® can also be used to treat excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) in the axillae or palms. There are other cosmetic uses for this product in the treatment of various facial wrinkles. This product is obtained directly from the manufacturer (Allergan) to ensure the highest quality and safety for our patients. Call us for your cosmetic consultation with Dr. Shelling.

Dysport

Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA) is another FDA-approved injectable neurotoxin used for the treatment of dynamic facial wrinkles. It has a similar mechanism of action and efficacy for the treatment of forehead, glabellar, and periorbital wrinkles. While it is very similar to BOTOX® in many respects, there are important differences in dosing and diffusion of the toxin, which must be accounted for in treatment. Dr. Shelling will help you to understand which neurotoxin will be most effective in helping you achieve your goals. Again, this product is obtained directly from the manufacturer (Medicis) to ensure the highest quality and safety for our patients.

Juvederm

JUVÉDERM® XC is an FDA-approved dermal filler which consists of cross-linked hyaluronic acid. It is used for filling and softening of smile lines (“parentheses” or nasolabial folds), vertical lip lines (lines above and around the lips), and marionette lines (vertical wrinkles at corner of the mouth). Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring hydrating substance that is present in the dermis of normal skin. With natural aging and sun exposure, this hyaluronic acid is reduced in quantity and quality over time, leading to skin laxity and skin folds. JUVÉDERM® XC is used to replace and restore the hyaluronic acid in deficient areas to help restore softer, more natural appearance to facial contours. It can be used to fill deep wrinkles and folds, enhance the lip shape and volume, and help to reshape the face. The results can be noticed immediately following the treatment and typically last 6-months or longer. The injections are typically well-tolerated and contain local anesthetics to limit patient discomfort. There may be some swelling/bruising after the procedure, but this typically improves over a few days. Feel free to ask Dr. Shelling how the use of fillers can help to complement neurotoxins (BOTOX®/Dysport®) and optimized skin care in a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation plan.

Restylane

Restylane® is another FDA-approved dermal filler made up of cross-linked hyaluronic acid. It is used to replace lost volume in the areas of treatment. Like JUVÉDERM® XC, it is primarily used for filling of nasolabial folds, vertical lip lines, marionette lines, lip augmentation, and replacement of volume loss in cheeks. Volume replacement with this hyaluronic acid can help to restore the natural contours and soften facial features to create a more refreshed appearance. These fillers also contain local anesthetics to limit the discomfort. Typical results also last for 6-months or longer in some cases. Dr. Shelling will work with you to develop an individualized treatment plan to achieve your goals in facial rejuvenation.

Radiesse

Radiesse® is another FDA-approved synthetic injectable dermal filler that can be used to fill in wrinkles and folds and help to restore facial contours. Unlike JUVÉDERM® XC and Restylane®, this product is composed of calcium hydroxyapetite, which is also a naturally-occuring substance in human skin. This fillers does provide some initial benefits in replacing volume loss, but it’s main benefit is believed to be the stimulation of new collagen formation over a more extended time. In this way, Radiesse® is believed to provide a more lasting correction to the treated areas. It is also used for correction of nasolabial folds and marionette lines and for enhancement of facial features around the jawline, chin, cheeks and eyes. The injections are tolerated as well as the hyaluronic acid products and pose the same risks for bruising or swelling after the treatment. With a combination approach, this more lasting filler can complement hyaluronic acid (JUVÉDERM® XC/Restylane®) in facial rejuvenation and provide greater stimulation of natural collagen over time.
